Gary Michael Gray was born on February 23, 1945. He is an American who used to play professional basketball. He was a guard in the NBA.
Early Life and College
Gary Gray was born in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. He is a Native American, from the Delaware Nation tribe. After finishing high school in Fort Cobb in 1963, he went to Oklahoma City University.
While at Oklahoma City University, Gary helped his team, the OCU Chiefs, win the All-College Tournament championship in 1966. His team also played in the 1966 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This is a big college basketball competition.
Gary was also a great student. He was named an Academic All-American for the 1966–1967 school year. This means he was recognized for being excellent in both sports and his studies.
Playing in the NBA
In 1967, Gary Gray was chosen by the Cincinnati Royals in the third round of the 1967 NBA draft. Being "drafted" means a professional team picks a player to join their team. He was also picked by the Dallas Chaparrals in the 1967 American Basketball Association Draft.
Gary played for the Cincinnati Royals during the 1967–68 season. He didn't play a lot of minutes, but he averaged 2.4 points per game. After that season, the Milwaukee Bucks picked him in the 1968 NBA Expansion Draft. An "expansion draft" happens when new teams join the league and pick players from other teams.
After Basketball
Gary Gray stopped playing professional basketball after the 1968 season. In 1986, he was honored for his achievements. He was added to the Oklahoma City University Basketball Hall of Fame.
