Trying to Become a City
In 2008, the people of Garyville had a chance to vote on whether their community should become an official city. This process is called "incorporation." If Garyville became a city, it would have its own local government and collect its own taxes.
The plan was for the new city to include several large industrial sites. These sites, like the Marathon Petroleum Company refinery, would provide a lot of tax money for the new city. However, a judge ruled that some of these industrial areas could not be included in the proposed city limits. This greatly reduced the amount of tax money the new city would have. Because of this, the vote to become a city failed on July 19, 2008.
