Gas Gas is a cool Spanish company that makes motorcycles. It was started in 1985 by Narcìs Casas and Josep Pibernat in a place called Salt, Girona.

This company is famous for making special bikes for riding off-road. These bikes are used in exciting races like trials and enduro competitions. In 2019, another big motorcycle company called KTM bought Gas Gas. After that, a Spanish company named Rieju got the rights to make some of the older Gas Gas off-road bikes.

History of Gas Gas Motorcycles

How Gas Gas Started

Back in 1973, Narcìs Casas and Josep Pibernat ran a shop that sold Bultaco motorcycles. But in 1979, the Bultaco factory closed down. So, Casas and Pibernat started bringing in motorcycles from an Italian company called SWM. This lasted until 1984 when SWM also stopped making bikes.

After that, Casas and Pibernat decided to make their own trial motorbikes. They started building Gas Gas trial motorcycles in 1985. Later, they added enduro and motocross bikes in 1989. In 2002, they even started making quads.

What Does "Gas Gas" Mean?

The name "Gas Gas" literally means "to give it gas" or "to accelerate" in Spanish. It's like saying "go faster!" The founders sometimes worried that the name might confuse people outside Spain. But others joked that the bikes were so good, they had to name them twice! For a while, the US importer used the slogan "Gas Gas = Fast Fast" to help people understand the unique name.

Changes Over the Years

In 2014, Gas Gas joined up with another Spanish motorcycle maker called Ossa. Then, in 2015, a group called Torrot took over the company.

Finally, in 2019, Pierer Mobility AG bought Gas Gas. This company is connected to KTM motorcycles, which is why KTM now owns Gas Gas.
