Gas Point, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gas Point was a small, old settlement in Shasta County, California. It was once a busy place but later became a ghost town. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and it's mostly empty. Gas Point was also known by other names like Pinckney and Janesville.

What Was Gas Point?

Gas Point was located in northern California, near a stream called Cottonwood Creek. It started way back in 1849 during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush. This was when many people rushed to California hoping to find gold.

A Gold Rush Story

People first settled in Gas Point because gold was discovered nearby. The gold was found at a spot called Reading's Bar. This discovery made Gas Point a busy mining town. Miners came to dig for gold, hoping to strike it rich. The town grew as more people arrived to join the gold rush.

Why Did It Become a Ghost Town?

Like many mining towns, Gas Point eventually became a ghost town. This often happens when the gold runs out, or it becomes too hard to find. People then move away to look for new opportunities. Over time, buildings become empty, and the town gets quiet. Gas Point was only visited by tourists who were curious about its history.

The Fire of 2008

Sadly, on April 8, 2008, Gas Point was completely destroyed by a fire. The fire burned the entire town to the ground. No one knows exactly what caused the fire. After this event, there was nothing left of the old settlement.
