Life of Gaspard Dughet
Gaspard Dughet was born in Rome. His father was a French pastry-cook, and his mother was Italian. Even though he was French, he never actually visited France!
Around 1631, when he was about 16, Gaspard became a student of a well-known painter named Nicolas Poussin. Nicolas Poussin had married Gaspard's sister, Anne, five years earlier. Because of this family connection, many people called Gaspard "Gaspard Poussin."
After he finished studying with Poussin, Gaspard's painting style became more flowing. He started painting many pictures of storms. About 30 out of his 400 known paintings show storms.
Painting Landscapes
Gaspard Dughet became an expert at painting landscapes. He especially loved painting the countryside around Rome, called the Roman Campagna. He became one of the two most important landscape painters of his time, along with Salvator Rosa.
He painted several series of large wall paintings called frescoes. One of these fresco series showed different places around Rome and was in the Colonna Palace. He also worked with other artists like Pier Francesco Mola and Mattia Preti at the Palazzo Pamphilj in Valmontone. He often worked with Guillaume Courtois, who would paint the small figures (called staffage) in Gaspard's landscapes.
Another set of frescoes by Dughet can be found in a church called San Martino ai Monti. However, these paintings are not in very good condition today.
Gaspard Dughet passed away in Rome on May 25, 1675.
Gaspard Dughet's Influence
In the 1700s, Gaspard Dughet's paintings became very popular, especially with art collectors in Britain. His name became so well-known that almost any classical landscape painting was sometimes thought to be by him. His style greatly influenced British landscape painting and even how gardens were designed.
One of his famous paintings, Sacrifice of Abraham, is now in the National Gallery in London, along with other works by him. Famous British painters like Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable were inspired by Dughet's work. They even suggested that other artists should study his paintings as a good example.
