Gastre is a small village in Chubut Province, Argentina. Its name comes from the Tehuelche language word Gástrrek, which means "shrub". Gastre is the main town of the Gastre Department. It was founded in 1904.

The Nuclear Project Debate
In the early 1990s, Gastre became the center of a big discussion. The National Atomic Energy Commission of Argentina suggested building a special storage site nearby. This site would have been for safely storing radioactive waste deep underground.
The idea was to keep the waste secure for a very long time. However, this proposal caused a lot of debate and concern among people. Many worried about the safety and environmental impact of storing such materials in the area. Because of these concerns, the plan was eventually stopped.
