The Gates Vascular Institute is a special 10-story building in Buffalo, New York. It works closely with the University at Buffalo's Clinical and Translational Research Center. This amazing building opened on May 24, 2012.
The Institute is right next to the Buffalo General Medical Center. It was designed by Mehrdad Yazdani from CannonDesign. The Gates Vascular Institute helps people with serious health issues. It offers care for strokes, cardiac surgery (heart operations), and problems with blood vessels. Building this important facility cost about $290 million.
Building Design and Purpose
The Gates Vascular Institute is a very modern building. It has 10 floors and covers a huge area. The first four floors are home to the Gates Vascular Institute itself. The top floors are used by the Clinical and Translational Research Center. This center focuses on finding new ways to treat diseases.
The building's design is very clever. It uses a special system called the "Universal Grid." This system makes it easy to change the inside of the building later. This means new medical equipment or different types of services can be added without big changes. It helps the building stay up-to-date with new medical discoveries.
The Gates Vascular Institute and the Buffalo General Medical Center are connected. Together, they have a new emergency room. They also have a special landing spot for helicopters. This helps bring patients to the hospital quickly. The combined buildings have 610 beds for patients. They also have 28 operating rooms for surgeries. There are 17 special labs for procedures and many advanced scanners. These include four CT scanners and four MRI machines.
Awards and Recognition
The Gates Vascular Institute has won important awards for its design. In 2013, it received the AIA Healthcare Design Award. This award came from the American Institute of Architects.
The judges praised the building's unique design. They said it showed a lot of new ideas. They liked how well everything was put together. The building's shape even shows how different teams work together. This project changed how hospitals are usually planned. It created shared spaces to help doctors and researchers work better.
