What Was Gator Tales About?
This 30-minute show was all about teaching kids good character and helping them feel good about themselves. It starred a funny puppet alligator named "Grouchie Gator" and his puppet friends. These puppets were brought to life by puppeteer Doug Kincaid and his team, "The Kincaid Karacter Puppets."
Grouchie's Adventures
The stories usually took place at "Grouchie's Place," which was Grouchie Gator's imaginary store in a swamp. Grouchie often got into silly trouble because of his wild ideas. But then, a friendly storyteller would gently show him his mistakes. They would do this by telling a cool folk tale that had a subtle lesson related to Grouchie's problem.
Who Made the Show?
"Gator Tales" was first produced by Al Frank, and later by Rebecca McDowell. Skip Goodrum was the director.
The Creative Team
Brothers Bill (William Kincaid) and Doug Kincaid were very important to the show. They created Grouchie Gator and all the other "Kincaid Karacter" puppets. They also designed the set and made the props for the show. Plus, Doug Kincaid wrote all the scripts for every episode!
The Storytellers
From 1988 to 1993, the storyteller on the show was Bobby Norfolk. Then, from 1994 to 1999, Annette Harrison took over the role. Sometimes, famous local actors would even appear as guests on the show. These included martial arts champion Earnest Hart, Jr., and entertainment reporter Todd Newton, who had one of his first TV jobs on "Gator Tales."
Why Was Gator Tales Special?
"Gator Tales" won many regional Emmy Awards during its 11 years on KMOV. It was one of the last "classic" local children's TV shows made before national channels like Nickelodeon became very popular.
Doug Kincaid's Other Work
Before working on "Gator Tales," Doug Kincaid also starred in another children's show called "D. B.'s Delight."
