Gavin Mitchell's AFL Career
Gavin Mitchell was known for his speed and ability to score goals. He started his AFL journey with the Fremantle Dockers in 1996. In his first season, he played 21 games. Before joining the AFL, he played for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL).
Playing for Fremantle Dockers
Mitchell was drafted from the West Kimberley Football Association. This was unusual, as most players came from major state leagues. In 1996, he played 21 matches for the Dockers. The next year, 1997, he played 15 games. After the 1997 season, he moved to the St Kilda Football Club.
Time with St Kilda Saints
Gavin Mitchell joined the St Kilda Saints for the 1998 season. He played well, appearing in 23 games and scoring 22 goals. In one game, he scored four goals by himself.
Improving in 1999
The 1999 was even better for Mitchell. He scored 34 goals in 20 matches. However, in 2000, his performance dropped. He scored 5 goals in the first game but then struggled. He was dropped from the team for a while.
Final Games in 2000
Mitchell returned to the team later in the 2000 season. By then, the Saints were at the bottom of the ladder. He found it hard to get chances to score. His last two games were not strong, and he was released from the club at the end of 2000.
State Football Matches
Gavin Mitchell also represented his state, Western Australia. He played three State games for Western Australia. These games took place in 1994, 1996, and 1998. All three matches were played at Football Park against South Australia.
