Gavin McGregor Rossdale (born 30 October 1965) is a British musician, singer, and songwriter. He is most famous as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Bush. Gavin helped create Bush in 1992. After the band took a break in 2002, he became the lead singer for another band called Institute and then started a solo music career. He returned to his role in Bush when the band got back together in 2010. In 2013, he won a special award called the Ivor Novello Award for his international achievements in music.
Gavin Rossdale's Early Life
Gavin Rossdale was born in Marylebone, London, England. His dad, Douglas Rossdale, was a doctor, and his mom was Barbara Stephan. His parents separated when he was 11 years old.
Around this time, Gavin became very interested in punk rock music from the 1970s. His older sister, Lorraine, introduced him to it. Gavin said that he learned a lot by trying to spend time with her friends. He was about 12 when punk music became popular. He loved bands like X-Ray Spex and the Buzzcocks. The Sex Pistols also had a big impact on him. He saw them on TV when he was young and said they "changed his life."
From 1979, Gavin went to Westminster School, which is a private school. He didn't enjoy his time there because he was sometimes picked on by other students.
Gavin Rossdale's Music Journey
Starting Out in Music
In the 1980s, Gavin formed a pop band called Midnight with a friend named Sacha Puttnam. They toured in places like Ireland and even opened for famous artists such as Cyndi Lauper. However, the band didn't become very successful after releasing two songs.
Later, Gavin joined another group called The Little Dukes. After trying to get a record deal in Los Angeles and New York City, the band eventually broke up in 1991.
Success with Bush
In 1992, Gavin Rossdale started the grunge band Bush. At first, they were called Future Primitive. Gavin was the singer and rhythm guitarist, and he became friends with lead guitarist Nigel Pulsford in 1991. Their first album, Sixteen Stone (released in 1994), was a huge hit!
Bush released more successful albums like Razorblade Suitcase, The Science of Things, and Golden State. These albums helped Bush become one of the most popular rock bands of the 1990s. Even though they were superstars in the US, they didn't have as much success in the UK, except for their album Razorblade Suitcase and the song "Swallowed." The band decided to take a break in 2002.
On June 21, 2010, Bush announced they were getting back together and planning a new album. The Sea of Memories came out on September 13, 2011. Since then, Bush has released four more albums: Man on the Run (2014), Black and White Rainbows (2017), The Kingdom (2020), and The Art of Survival (2022).
Other Music Projects

In 2004, while Bush was on a break, Gavin formed a new band called Institute. Their album, Distort Yourself, came out in 2005 and did fairly well. The song "Bullet Proof Skin" from that album was used in the movie Stealth. Institute broke up in 2006 after releasing just one album.
Gavin's song, "Can't Stop the World," was the opening theme for the TV show Drive in 2007. He also sang a cover of John Lennon's "Mind Games" for a special album. Gavin's first solo album, Wanderlust, was released on June 3, 2008. His then-wife, Gwen Stefani, sang background vocals on one of the songs. Other famous singers like Shirley Manson and Katy Perry also sang on the album.
The first song from WANDERlust, "Love Remains The Same," was released in 2008. It became a Top 40 hit, which was Gavin's first big hit since his days with Bush.
Gavin also sang on the Apocalyptica song "End of Me" in 2010. In 2013, he received the Ivor Novello Awards for International Achievement in Songwriting.
