Franck Hueso is a French musician from Poitiers, France, who is better known by his stage name, Carpenter Brut. He is famous for making a style of electronic music called synthwave and darksynth.

Hueso has released three EPs (short albums): EP I (2012), EP II (2013), and EP III (2015). These were later put together into one album called Trilogy (2015). He also released the studio albums Leather Teeth (2018), Blood Machines OST (2020), and Leather Terror (2022). He has even created music for movies and video games.

Carpenter Brut likes to keep his real identity a secret. He believes this helps people focus on the music itself, not the person who makes it. He wanted to mix the sounds of horror movies, metal, rock, and electronic music. For live shows, he performs with guitarist Adrien Grousset and drummer Florent Marcadet.

How It All Started

Hueso has said that Carpenter Brut began as "a joke." The name is a mix of two things: the last name of movie director John Carpenter and a type of champagne called Charpentier Brut.

He chose to make electronic music because he wanted to create music by himself instead of in a band. He explained that electronic music is great for that, especially since he didn't feel he was a skilled musician on traditional instruments.

Musical Journey

First EPs and Trilogy (2012–2015)

Carpenter Brut's first two EPs came out on the BlackBvs Records label. Starting in 2015, he released his music on his own label, No Quarter Prod. This allowed him to be independent and have full control over his music and image.

Two of his songs, "Le Perv" and "Roller Mobster," were featured in the popular video game Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Another track, "Escape from Midwich Valley," was used in one of the game's trailers.

Leather Teeth (2018)

Carpenter Brut's second album, Leather Teeth, was released as a surprise on February 22, 2018. The album tells the story of a shy American teenager named Bret Halford. Bret wants to impress a girl and decides to become the singer of a glam-metal band called Leather Patrol.

Hueso said the album was inspired by the band Judas Priest and the glam rock music of the 1980s. Leather Teeth is the first part of a trilogy of albums. It tells the beginning of the main character's story. Hueso described the album's sound as "softer" and "more glamorous" than his earlier work, but with a dark side that would be explored in the next album.

Blood Machines OST (2020)

In April 2020, Carpenter Brut released Blood Machines OST. This album is the soundtrack for a 50-minute movie directed by a team called Seth Ickerman. The same team directed the music video for his song "Turbo Killer." The idea for the movie came after fans loved the music video and wanted to see more.

Leather Terror (2022)

The next album, Leather Terror, was released on April 1, 2022. This album continues the story from Leather Teeth, but takes the music down a darker and more intense path. The story is about the main character feeling angry and wanting to get back at someone who was mean to him.

The album has 12 tracks. Hueso described one of the songs as being very long and fast, with a style similar to black metal music.

Other Projects

Hueso has worked on many other projects. He wrote music for the 2016 video game Furi. He said this was different from his usual work because he had to match the music to scenes in the game.

In 2018, he worked with the band Ghost to create a remix of their song "Dance Macabre." In 2019, Hueso was featured in a documentary film called The Rise of the Synths, which explored the history of the synthwave music scene.

Music Videos

Creating the Visuals

The directors Raphaël Hernandez and Savitri Joly-Gonfard, known as Seth Ickerman, directed the music videos for Carpenter Brut's first three EPs. For the "Turbo Killer" music video, Hueso gave the directors complete creative freedom. He only asked that they include certain characters he had imagined. He was thrilled with the final result.

Blood Machines (2020)

Blood Machines is a science fiction film directed by Seth Ickerman with a full soundtrack by Carpenter Brut. It is considered a sequel to the "Turbo Killer" music video.

The official story is about two space hunters tracking a machine that is trying to escape. After they capture it, they see something amazing: the ghost of a young woman comes out of the machine, as if the spaceship had a soul. They then chase this mysterious woman through space.

Influences

Hueso has said that his early work was influenced by the electronic group Justice. Later, he was more inspired by progressive rock bands like Toto and Supertramp. He also enjoys music from Iron Maiden, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, and even The Beatles.

His music is also heavily influenced by 1980s movies, especially action and sci-fi films. He loves movies like Star Wars, The Terminator, RoboCop, and The Thing. He said that in these movies, the music was a very important part of the experience, which he tries to capture in his own work.
