Gaziantep University (Turkish: Gaziantep Üniversitesi) is a large public university located in Gaziantep, Turkey. It is known as one of the top universities in Turkey. The university has 20 different faculties, focusing a lot on science and technology.
Gaziantep is a major city for trade and industry in southeastern Turkey. Gaziantep University officially became a state university on June 27, 1987. However, higher education started on its campus much earlier, in 1973. Back then, it was an extension of the Middle East Technical University. The main campus is in Gaziantep, close to the city center. There are also smaller campuses in nearby cities.
The main goals of Gaziantep University are:
- To offer education and training in many fields like culture, science, technology, medicine, and vocational skills.
- To conduct important research, both basic and applied.
- To share knowledge and ideas with other similar schools in Turkey and around the world.
In the 2008-2009 school year, the university had over 24,000 undergraduate students and nearly 500 postgraduate students. About 1,000 teachers and researchers worked there. The main language used for teaching at Gaziantep University is English.
Gaziantep University has been recognized in global rankings. For example, it was ranked among the top universities by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings from 2020 to 2021.

University History
The university's roots go back to 1973. That's when the Department of Mechanical Engineering was first created. In 1974, the Engineering Faculty opened, and all its classes were taught in English. More engineering departments were added soon after. These included Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1974, Food Engineering in 1977, Civil Engineering in 1981, and Engineering Physics in 1982.
Gaziantep University became its own independent state university on June 27, 1987. The Engineering Faculty and Vocational School of Higher Education, which were part of Middle East Technical University (METU), joined Gaziantep University. Over the years, many new faculties and schools were added. These included Medicine, Arts and Sciences, Economic and Administrative Sciences, and Education.
The university continued to grow throughout the 1990s and 2000s. More vocational schools and departments were established. This growth helped the university offer a wider range of subjects to students. Today, the university offers courses in many different areas. These include undergraduate and graduate programs.
The university has a large number of staff and students. It has many academic staff, teaching assistants, and administrative staff. Thousands of students are currently studying there. Many students have also graduated from Gaziantep University over the years.

Faculty of Engineering
This faculty is home to many important engineering fields.
Department of Engineering Physics

Gaziantep University is one of only a few universities in Turkey with this department.
Department of Computer Engineering

These include a Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Azaz. There will also be a Faculty of Education in Afrin. A Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences will open in Al-Bab. The university already opened a vocational school in Jarabulus in October 2018. All these new schools are located within Syria.
