Standing Up for Native Voices
Geary Hobson is famous for his scholarly work. He has gathered and studied many works of American Indian Literature. He also speaks out against people who use Native American culture in wrong ways. This means using parts of a culture without truly understanding or respecting it.
In 1976, he wrote an important essay. It was called "The Rise of the White Shaman as a New Version of Cultural Imperialism." In this essay, Hobson talked about some writers. He felt their works made it harder to understand real Native American experiences. He believed using traditional language without proper understanding was disrespectful.
