Gebhard, Duke of Lorraine facts for kids
Gebhard of Lahngau (born around 860 or 868 – died June 22, 910) was an important leader from a powerful family called the Conradines. His father was Odo, who was a count in a region called Lahngau. Gebhard himself became a count in other areas like Wetterau (from 909 to 910) and Rheingau (from 897 to 906). Later, he became the duke of Lotharingia, which was a large and important territory.
Becoming a Duke
In the year 903, Louis the Child, who was the king of Germany at the time, gave Gebhard control over the region of Lotharingia. He was given the special title of "duke." This meant he was a very powerful ruler in that area.
Family Life
Gebhard was married to a woman named Ida. They had two children together:
- Herman (who died in 949) later became the duke of Swabia, another important region.
- Odo (who also died in 949) followed in his father's footsteps. He became a count in Wetterau (from 914), Lahngau (from 918), and Rheingau (from 917). Odo married a woman named Cunigunda, who was the daughter of Herbert I of Vermandois.
His Death
Gebhard's life ended in battle. On June 22, 910, he was fighting against a group of invaders known as the Magyars. These were fierce warriors from the east. Gebhard died during this battle, which took place somewhere near the city of Augsburg.
