About Geert Adriaans Boomgaard
His Early Life
Geert Adriaans Boomgaard was born in Groningen, a city in the Netherlands. His father, Adriaan Jacobs Boomgaard, was a boat captain. Geert followed in his father's footsteps and also became a boat captain. Some records also show that he was a soldier. He served in Napoleon's army, which was a very large and powerful army at the time. He was part of the 33rd Light Infantry Regiment.
His Marriages and Family
When Geert was 29 years old, he married Stijntje Bus on March 4, 1818. They had eight children together. Sadly, Stijntje passed away at age 33, just one month after their eighth child was born.
About a year later, on March 17, 1831, Geert married Grietje Abels Jonker. With Grietje, he had four more children. This meant Geert had a total of 12 children during his life.
Living a Very Long Life
Geert Adriaans Boomgaard lived for a very long time. On January 8, 1897, he became the oldest man ever recorded. He was older than Pierre Darcourt from Belgium, who had lived to be 108 years and 108 days old.
By April 10, 1898, Geert was even older than Kirsti Skagen, a Norwegian woman who had lived to be 109. This made him the oldest person whose age had ever been officially checked and proven at that time.
Sadly, Geert outlived all of his children. His last child, Jansje Hinderika, died in 1885 when she was 56 years old.
Geert Adriaans Boomgaard passed away when he was 110 years and 135 days old. After him, the first woman to live longer than him was Margaret Ann Neve. She lived to be almost 111 years old. Geert remained the longest-lived man until October 29, 1966. On that date, John Mosely Turner lived longer than Geert, reaching 111 years and nine months.
