The Story of Gemini TV
Gemini TV began broadcasting on February 9, 1995. It was started by the Gemini Group in Hyderabad. This group worked together with the Sun TV Network to launch the channel. Gemini TV was special because it was the first satellite TV channel in the Telugu language. A satellite TV channel sends its signals from space. This allows people to watch TV over a very wide area.
In 1996 and 1997, the Sun TV Network bought a large part of Gemini TV. This meant they gained control over the channel's decisions. When it first started, Gemini TV only broadcast for four hours a day. Its signals were sent from Singapore using a Rimsat satellite. Over time, the channel grew and started broadcasting for 12 hours a day. By May 2000, Gemini TV was a very strong competitor to other channels like ETV.
The Sun Group has many TV channels. They have channels for different languages in India. Gemini Television Private Limited handled the Telugu channels. Other companies within the Sun Group managed channels in Tamil and Kannada. In November 2006, these different TV companies, including Gemini TV Ltd, joined together under the Sun TV Network Ltd. This was done as part of a business change for the Sun TV Network.
