Gemma Ubasart González is a Spanish expert in politics and a politician. She held an important job as the Minister of Justice, Rights and Memory for the region of Catalonia in Spain. She served in this role from October 2022 to August 2024.
Before becoming a minister, Gemma Ubasart was a city councilor in her hometown, Castellar del Vallès. She also worked for a political party called Podemos, where she was in charge of international affairs and new public policies. In 2015, she became the main leader (secretary general) of Podemos in Catalonia.
Gemma Ubasart's Education and Early Career
Gemma Ubasart studied a lot to become an expert in politics. She earned a special degree called a PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This means she did a lot of advanced research and writing in her field.
She also studied the justice system and human rights at the University of Barcelona. Plus, she learned how to analyze social information and data. After her studies, she became a professor, teaching at the University of Girona and the Autonomous University of Madrid.
Political Journey and Roles
Gemma Ubasart started her political career in her local town. In 2007, she was chosen by the people to be a member of the city council in Castellar del Vallès. A city council is a group of elected people who make decisions for their town or city.
Later, in November 2014, she joined the national leadership of the Podemos political party. She became part of the team led by Pablo Iglesias Turrión. In this role, she focused on international relations and creating new ideas for public services.
In February 2015, Gemma Ubasart was elected as the top leader (secretary general) for Podemos in Catalonia. She held this important position until October 2015.
