The Gen. John Stark House is a special old house in Manchester, New Hampshire. It's now a historic house museum, which means you can visit it to learn about the past! This cozy, one-story house was built way back in 1736. It was the home of John Stark, a brave hero of the American Revolutionary War (that's when America fought for its freedom!). John Stark lived here from the time he was born until 1765. This is also where he brought his wife, Molly Stark, and where two of their children were born. In 1973, the house was recognized as an important historical place. Today, a group called the Daughters of the American Revolution takes care of it and runs it as a museum.
What Does the House Look Like?
The General John Stark House is located north of downtown Manchester. You can find it at the corner of Elm and Waldo Streets. It's a one-and-a-half-story wooden house with a pointy roof and a big chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden planks called clapboards.
A single-story part sticks out from the back, making the house look a bit like the letter "L". The front of the house has five sections. The main door is in the middle, with a window above it that has many small panes of glass. The windows on either side of the door have nine small panes on top and six on the bottom.
Inside, the house has a classic layout. There's a small entrance area, and then rooms on both sides of the central chimney. The kitchen stretches across most of the back of the house. There are also small rooms in the corners, and stairs leading up to the attic in the northwest corner.
A Home with a Long History
This house was built in 1736 on an 800-acre farm owned by Archibald Stark, John Stark's father. The Stark family grew up here. The house stayed in the Stark family until 1821.
Later, in 1835, a company called the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company bought the house. They used it to house their workers. In 1937, the company gave the house to the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This group worked hard to fix up the house and turn it into a place for meetings and to share history.
The house wasn't always in its current spot! It was originally on Canal Street. In 1968, it was carefully moved to its present location. This new spot is also part of the original Stark family farm.
