What Makes This House Special?
The Kellogg-Eddy House is located on Willard Avenue in Newington. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has five windows across the front and a main door in the middle. You'll notice two chimneys inside the house. The front door has a special fan-shaped window above it and a small porch with round columns. Later, in 1927 and 1928, two more sections were added to the sides and back of the house.
The Kellogg Family's Legacy
The main part of the house was built around 1808. It was built by William Kellogg for his son, Martin Kellogg. Martin Kellogg was a very important person in Newington. He was mostly a farmer, but he also served in the state's military, which is why he was called "General" Martin Kellogg. He cared a lot about education. In 1829, he helped start a local school for higher learning.
The Eddy Family and Beyond
In 1913, the house and farm were bought by Elford Welles Eddy. He was a distant relative of the Kellogg family. Elford Eddy used the farm to raise dairy cows. He also helped out in the community by serving on the local library board and the water district board. He even served one term in the state legislature, helping to make laws for Connecticut.
After Elford Eddy passed away, the town bought the house from his wife in 1975. Today, the local historical society takes care of the Kellogg-Eddy House. They run it as a museum, so people like you can visit and learn about what life was like in Newington many years ago!
