Exploring the Kellogg-Eddy House
The Kellogg-Eddy House is located west of Newington's town center. It stands on the west side of Willard Avenue, which is also called Connecticut Route 173. The house is quite large, with two and a half stories. It's made of wood and has five sections across its front.
What the House Looks Like
The front of the house has a main entrance in the middle. Above the door, there's a cool, fan-shaped window called a fanlight. A small porch, or portico, covers the entrance. This porch has round columns that support it. Inside, the house has two chimneys. In 1927 and 1928, two more sections were added to the sides and back of the house. These additions also have two stories.
Who Lived Here?
The main part of the house was built around 1808. It was built by William Kellogg for his son, Martin Kellogg. William Kellogg was a very important person in Newington. Martin Kellogg was mainly a farmer. He earned his military title, "General," by serving in the state militia. A militia is like a local army that helps protect the state.
General Kellogg also helped start a local school for higher education in 1829. This shows he cared a lot about learning.
Later Owners and Its Museum Life
In 1913, a man named Elford Welles Eddy bought the house and farm. He was a distant cousin to the Kellogg family. Mr. Eddy raised dairy cows on the farm. He also helped out in the community. He served on the local library board and the water district board. He even served one term in the state legislature. A state legislature is a group of people who make laws for the state.
After Mr. Eddy passed away, the town bought the house from his wife in 1975. Now, the local historical society takes care of the house. They run it as a museum. This means you can visit and learn about the families who lived there and what life was like long ago!
