Eugene Short Jr. (born August 7, 1953 – died March 16, 2016) was an American professional basketball player. He played as a small forward, a position in basketball. Gene was 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 200 pounds. He went to college at Jackson State University.

Becoming a Pro Basketball Player

Gene Short was chosen by professional basketball teams. In 1975, the New York Knicks picked him. This was in the first round of the 1975 NBA Draft. He was the 9th player chosen overall.

Before that, in 1974, he was also picked by the San Antonio Spurs. They were a team in the American Basketball Association. This league was a rival to the NBA at the time.

Playing for Team USA

Gene Short also played for the US national team. He joined them in the 1974 FIBA World Championship. This big tournament was held in Puerto Rico.

His team played very well. They won the bronze medal at the championship. This means they finished in third place.

NBA Career

After college, Gene Short played in the NBA. He played for two teams during the 1975–76 season.

He played for the Seattle SuperSonics. He also played for the New York Knicks. In total, he played in 34 NBA games.
