General Ballivián is a small village and a rural area in Salta Province, located in northwestern Argentina. This place has a hot, subtropical climate. It sits between the subtropical forests and the Chaco Salta region, right at the base of the Tartagal mountains. People sometimes call it part of the "vermilion region." General Ballivián was first settled when oil was discovered nearby.

General Ballivián is named after an important historical figure: José Ballivián. He was a general and even served as the president of Bolivia from 1841 to 1847. José Ballivián (1805–1852) was known as a brave leader. He worked hard to help Bolivia, both through peaceful talks and military efforts. The town honors his memory by carrying his name.
