The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party is the most important leader in Laos. This person is the head of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP). Since 1975, when the party took power, the General Secretary has been the country's supreme leader.

The General Secretary also leads the Defense and Public Security Commission. This means they are the commander-in-chief of the Lao People's Armed Forces, which is the country's military. From 1991 to 2006, this position was called the Chairman of the Central Committee. The Party's Central Committee chooses the General Secretary. Often, the General Secretary also becomes the President of Laos. However, from 1975 to 1991 and again from 1992 to 1998, they were usually the Prime Minister.
