The Lao People's Revolutionary Party (Lao: ພັກປະຊາຊົນປະຕິວັດລາວ) is a major political party in Laos. It is based on Marxism–Leninism, which is a type of communism. This party has been in charge of Laos since 1975.
The party grew out of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which was started by Ho Chi Minh in 1930. Important groups within the party that make big decisions are the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Central Committee.
Every five years, the party holds a special meeting called a party congress. At this meeting, members choose who will be part of the Politburo and the Central Committee. In 2016, most of the members in the National Assembly of Laos (128 out of 132) were from the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.
Party History
The Lao People's Revolutionary Party began with the Communist Party of Indochina. This party was created by Ho Chi Minh in 1930. At first, it was mostly made up of people from Vietnam. But it slowly grew to include members from all over French Indochina.
In 1936, a small "Lao section" of the Communist Party of Indochina was formed. By the mid-1940s, the party started to actively look for more members from Laos. Around 1946 or 1947, two important people, Kaysone Phomvihan and Nouhak Phoumsavan, joined the party. Kaysone Phomvihan was studying law at the University of Hanoi at the time.
