Geneva is a small, unincorporated community located in Noble Township, Shelby County, in the state of Indiana, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county or township.
History of Geneva
Geneva was officially planned and mapped out, or platted, in the year 1853. When a town is platted, it means its streets, lots, and public areas are drawn on a map. This helps organize how the community will grow.
The community got its name from the famous city of Geneva in Switzerland. It's interesting how places in America sometimes get names from cities around the world!
Before it was called Geneva, this area had an older name: Sulphur Hill. This name might have come from natural sulfur springs in the area.
A post office was set up in Sulphur Hill in 1836. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. This post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1904.
