Geneviève Waïte was best known for her acting role in the 1968 film Joanna, where she played the main character. She was also a favourite subject for the famous photographer Richard Avedon. He took many pictures of her for Vogue magazine in the early 1970s.

In 1974, Geneviève Waïte released her only music album. It was produced and written by her husband, John Phillips, who was a member of the famous band The Mamas and the Papas. People described her singing voice as a mix of "Betty Boop crossed with Billie Holiday". That same year, she also starred in a musical on Broadway called Man on the Moon. She helped write this musical with John Phillips, and it was produced by Andy Warhol.
