Genie Shenk (1937–2018) was an American artist, editor, and teacher from San Diego, California. She was known for her unique art, especially her book art and fiber art. Genie created beautiful quilts using handmade paper. She made this paper from natural and recycled materials. Her art often showed her dreams and ideas, inspired by a type of thinking called Jungian philosophy.

Early Life and Education

Genie Shenk was born on August 3, 1937, in Montgomery, Alabama. She loved learning and studied English at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She earned her bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees there. Later, she went to the UCLA to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1990.

Genie also worked as a teacher and editor. She was an English professor at Texas Southern University. She also worked as an editor at the UCSF Medical Center and the American Book Company. From 1970 to 1974, she helped students at the University of California, San Diego.

Artworks and Exhibitions

Genie Shenk's art has been shown in many places. Her unique pieces are part of special collections. You can find her work at the University of Washington Library and the University of California, San Diego Special Collections.

Her art is also displayed at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla. The Long Beach Museum of Art has also featured her work. Important museums, like the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Yale University Art Gallery, own her art.

Awards and Recognition

Genie Shenk received several awards for her artistic talent. She was honored at the Women's Festival of the Arts in 1978. In 1982, she won an award from the Multicultural Art Institute. She also received a special Woodrow Wilson fellowship in 1959.

Genie was a member of several art groups. These included Phi Beta Kappa, the National Surface Design Association, and the American Craft Council. To honor her, the San Diego Book Arts (SDBA) gives out "The Genie Shenk Excellence in Book Arts Award" each year. This award celebrates talented mid-career artists.

Later Life and Death

Genie Shenk passed away on August 19, 2018. She was 81 years old. She died in Seattle, Washington.
