Plot Summary
Charlie Boyle is a 13-year-old physics genius who loves hockey. He enrolls in a college in Wisconsin. His goal is to work with Dr. Krickstein, a scientist he really looks up to. Charlie is tired of being seen as just a "geek." He feels like people don't treat him well because he is so smart.
Dr. Krickstein has been studying gravity for many years. He wants to figure out how to make things float. His lab is hidden under the college's hockey rink. Charlie finds it hard to make friends with the older college students.
One day, Charlie meets a teenage girl named Claire Addison. She goes to a local high school. To be closer to Claire, Charlie pretends to be a new student at her school. He tells her his name is Chaz Anthony. Charlie decides to change his image. He thinks being a "nerd" won't help him get a girlfriend. So, he acts like a "bad boy" to seem cool and make friends at Claire's school. He even convinces Claire to tutor him. Claire's dad is Coach Addison, who coaches the college's Northern Lights hockey team.
Charlie soon realizes that living two different lives is very difficult. Eventually, his secret double life is revealed. This happens at the college's hockey championship game. Claire's father recognizes him as Charlie Boyle. Claire is upset and confronts Charlie, who then tells her the truth.
Charlie also realizes he left a machine called a particle accelerator running in the lab. It overheats and cracks the ice on the hockey rink. This stops the game, which the Northern Lights were about to win. Coach Addison's job is now in trouble. Claire is very angry with Charlie and tells him she doesn't want to see him again. She also won't answer his calls. Charlie tries to apologize over the school's speaker system, but Claire and his best friends, Odie and Dieon, are still mad at him.
Charlie figures out how to use a special device called a graviton. He can use it to control how other objects move. He decides to use it to help the hockey team win. He wants to help them cheat against the other team, who are also cheating. Charlie asks his friends for help. They refuse at first. But when Claire calls him "Chaz," Charlie tells them he is Charlie Boyle and needs their help. Odie and Dieon agree to help. Soon, Claire and his other friends from junior high also join in.
Charlie and his friends create a distraction. This helps them put tiny microchips on three main players from the other team. Then, Charlie and Claire use the graviton to control these players. This stops the other team from cheating.
Dr. Krickstein didn't want to help Charlie cheat at first. But he steps in to help later. He accidentally causes a power surge. This makes the graviton work backward. Suddenly, Charlie, Claire, Dr. Krickstein, and the players they are connected to all start to float! The Northern Lights team wins the game. Coach Addison's job is saved. Charlie and Claire kiss and start dating.
Later, Charlie and his friends set up a friendly hockey game. Dr. Krickstein joins their team. Before they can start, the Northern Lights team arrives. Charlie's college roommate, Mike, is with them. They learned from Claire's dad what Charlie did to help them win. The Northern Lights ask to play a game against Charlie and his friends. Charlie agrees, but only if Dr. Krickstein is on his team. The Northern Lights reluctantly agree.
