Genoa, Houston facts for kids
Genoa is an area in Houston, Texas, United States. It's about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Downtown Houston. Long ago, Genoa was its own separate community in Harris County.
A Look Back at Genoa
J. H. Burnett started the community of Genoa in 1892. He named it "Genoa" because he thought the weather was like Genoa, Italy. A post office opened there in the same year. Mr. Burnett built a train station for the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad. He also built five houses, a hotel, and a store.
The main street of Genoa is now called Almeda Genoa Road. This road connected Genoa to Almeda. The east side of Genoa was near Old Galveston Road (Texas State Highway 3). This was also where the Galveston, Houston, Henderson Railroad was. The west side was near Freestone Street. Another road, Allen Genoa Road, connected Genoa to Allen.
Genoa grew slowly over time. In 1914, about 200 people lived there. There were also several businesses. These included a general store, a dairy, and a blacksmith shop. By 1925, the population was 100 people. It stayed around this number until 1941. In 1941, Genoa had 400 people and fifteen businesses. The population stayed at this level until Houston made Genoa part of the city in the mid-1960s.
Schools and Learning
Kids living in the Genoa area go to school in the Pasadena Independent School District. This is different from the Houston Independent School District, even though Genoa is now part of Houston.
The schools for Genoa students are:
