Sir Geoffrey Schomberg Arbuthnot was a very important officer in the Royal Navy. He reached the high rank of Vice Admiral. He was known for his service in both the First World War and the Second World War.

Early Years and Training
Geoffrey Arbuthnot was born in Havant, Hampshire, on January 18, 1885. His father, Charles Ramsay Arbuthnot, was also an Admiral in the Navy. Geoffrey went to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, which is a special school for future naval officers. He joined the Royal Navy in 1900 when he was just 15 years old.
Leading Ships and Fleets
After serving in the First World War, Geoffrey Arbuthnot took on many important roles. In 1929, he was given command of a large warship called HMS Suffolk. He then helped train other sailors and plan how the Navy worked. In 1934, he became the leader of groups of fast warships called destroyers in the Home Fleet. The next year, he took command of another important ship, HMS Valiant.
In 1936, he became a special helper to King George VI. This role was called Naval Aide-de-Camp. The next year, he became the Fourth Sea Lord. This meant he was in charge of getting supplies and transport for the entire Navy.
Serving in World Wars
Sir Geoffrey Arbuthnot fought bravely in the First World War. For his actions, he was given the Distinguished Service Order in 1919. This is a special award for courage. He was also mentioned in official reports for his good work.
He continued to serve during the Second World War. From 1941 to 1942, he was the top commander for the Navy in the East Indies. This area was very important for shipping and trade. For his service, he received more high honors. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1942. He also received the French Legion of Honour, which is a major award from France.
After his time as a commander, he led a committee that decided who should receive honors and awards. He did this from 1942 until he retired in 1945.
His Family Life
On October 22, 1913, Geoffrey Arbuthnot married Jessie Marguerite Henderson. They had three children together: Mary Marguerite, Peter Charles Reginald, and Michael Geoffrey Henderson.
