Geoffrey de Melville lived in Scotland during the 12th century. He was a trusted figure in the Scottish government.
One of his important jobs was being the Sheriff of Edinburgh. He held this role around the year 1153. At that time, Malcolm IV of Scotland was the king. A sheriff was like a chief officer in a region. They helped keep the peace and collect taxes for the king.
Later, around 1170, Geoffrey also became a Justiciar of Lothian. He shared this role with others. A justiciar was a high-ranking judge. They helped make sure laws were followed across a large area. This was during the time of King William I of Scotland.
