Georg Hackl, often called Hackl Schorsch, is a famous German former luge athlete. He was born on September 9, 1966. He won many big competitions, including three Olympic gold medals. People sometimes called him the Speeding Weißwurst. This was because of his white racing suit and how fast he went down the luge track!

About Georg Hackl

Georg Hackl was born in Berchtesgaden, a town in Bavaria, Germany. He started luge when he was in school. He learned to slide on the ice at the Königssee track. This track is famous for winter sports.

His Rivalry and Skills

Hackl was well-known for his friendly competition with another great luger, Markus Prock. Prock often won the World Cup races. But Hackl was amazing at the Winter Olympics. He always seemed to do his best there.

Even though Hackl wasn't naturally the strongest athlete, he was very smart. He was incredibly skilled at setting up his sled. He could make his sled perfect for the ice conditions on any given day. His coach, Thomas Schwab, said that Hackl's strong mind helped him win.

Olympic Success

Hackl won his first Olympic luge medal in 1988 in Calgary. He finished second in the men's singles event. Four years later, he won his first gold medal in 1992. He won gold again in 1994 and 1998.

In 1998, he made history! He had the fastest time in all four runs of the race. This was a first for men's singles luge at the Olympics. Because of his amazing wins, he was named the German Sportsman of the Year in 1998.

He continued his winning streak. In the 2002 Games, he won a silver medal. This made him the first Winter Olympian to win a medal in five straight Winter Olympics! He competed one last time in the 2006 Winter Olympics, finishing 7th.

After Retiring

After the 2006 Winter Olympics, Hackl stopped competing. He then became a coach for other German lugers. He works with a group called the "Sunshine Training Group." He helps them with their sleds.

Some famous lugers from his group include Felix Loch and Natalie Geisenberger. These athletes won all the luge gold medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics!

World and European Championships

Hackl won many medals at the FIL World Luge Championships. He earned a total of 22 medals. This included ten gold medals in both singles and mixed team events. He also won ten silver medals and two bronze medals.

At the FIL European Luge Championships, Hackl won twelve medals. He took home seven gold medals. He also won four silver medals and one bronze medal.

He also won the overall Luge World Cup title twice. This was for the men's singles event in 1988–89 and 1989–90.

Wok Racing Champion

Besides luge, Hackl is also a nine-time world champion in wok racing! This is a fun sport where people race down a bobsled track in a Chinese wok.

In 2013, Georg Hackl was honored for his amazing career. He was added to the International Luge Federation's Hall of Fame. This shows how important he was to the sport of luge.
