Georg Hackl (born September 9, 1966) is a famous German athlete who competed in the sport of luge. In luge, athletes lie on their backs on a small sled and race down an icy track at very high speeds.

Hackl is one of the best lugers in history. He won three Olympic gold medals in a row and is a ten-time World Champion. He was known by the nickname Hackl-Schorsch. He was also called the Speeding Weißwurst (a type of white sausage) because of the white suit he wore while racing down the track.

Early Life and Start in Luge

Georg Hackl was born in Berchtesgaden, a town in the Bavarian region of Germany. He discovered luge during his physical education classes at school. He learned how to slide on the Königssee track, a famous track right in his home region. This early start helped him become a world-class athlete.

A Legendary Olympic Career

Hackl is a true Olympic legend. He became the first Winter Olympian to win a medal at five different Winter Olympics in a row.

  • 1988 Calgary: He won his first Olympic medal, a silver, in the men's singles event.
  • 1992 Albertville: He won his first Olympic gold medal.
  • 1994 Lillehammer: He won gold again, defending his title.
  • 1998 Nagano: He won his third straight gold medal. In this competition, he was the fastest in all four runs of the race, which was a first in Olympic history for the men's singles event.
  • 2002 Salt Lake City: He won another silver medal, completing his amazing streak of five Olympic medals.

In his final Olympics in 2006, he finished in 7th place before retiring from the sport.

Rivalry and Skill

Throughout his career, Hackl had a famous rivalry with Austrian luger Markus Prock. While Prock often won more races in the regular World Cup season, Hackl was known for performing his best at the Olympics.

Hackl was not just a great athlete; he was also very smart. He was known for being an expert at setting up his sled. He could make small changes to it to match the specific ice conditions on any track, which gave him an advantage. His coach, Thomas Schwab, said that Hackl's mental toughness was a key reason for his success.

World and European Championships

Besides his Olympic success, Hackl was also a champion at other major events.

  • World Championships: He won an incredible 22 medals. This included 10 gold medals, 10 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals in both singles and team events.
  • European Championships: He won 12 medals, including 7 golds, 4 silvers, and 1 bronze.
  • World Cup: He won the overall Luge World Cup title for men's singles two times, in the 1988–89 and 1989–90 seasons.

Life After Racing

After retiring in 2006, Hackl became a coach. He uses his knowledge to help the next generation of German lugers. He is in charge of a group of athletes called the "Sunshine Training Group." He works with them on their sleds and technique.

His coaching has been very successful. Members of his group, like Felix Loch and Natalie Geisenberger, have gone on to win many Olympic gold medals.

For his amazing career, Hackl was inducted into the International Luge Federation's Hall of Fame in 2013. He is also a nine-time world champion in wok racing, a fun sport where people race down bobsled tracks in large woks.
