Georg Philipp Schmidt was born in the city of Lübeck, Germany. His family had a long history of being merchants. When he was young, he went to university to study law. He studied law in the cities of Jena and Göttingen between 1786 and 1790.
Later, he decided to change his studies. He first looked into theology, which is the study of religion. After that, he studied medicine. While he was in Jena, he became friends with other writers. These friends included Sophie Mereau and Johann Gottfried Herder.
Career and Famous Works
After finishing his studies, Georg Philipp Schmidt traveled around Germany. He then began to work for the Danish government. He served as a civil servant, which means he worked for the government, until the year 1829.
