Early Life and Start in Rugby League
George Ambrum was born on Thursday Island in Queensland. He started playing junior rugby league in Cairns, Queensland. In 1966, he moved to Sydney to join the North Sydney Bears team. This was the start of his professional career.
Playing for the North Sydney Bears
George Ambrum played for the North Sydney Bears for nine seasons. He was with the club from 1966 to 1974. During this time, he played over 150 games for the team. He was a key player for the Bears.
Representing Australia
In 1972, George Ambrum was chosen to play for the Australian national team. This team is also known as the Kangaroos. He played in the Trans-Tasman series against New Zealand. In his first game, he scored two amazing tries. He played one more game on that tour.
He was expected to be picked for the World Cup tour later that year. However, a knee injury stopped him from joining the team. George Ambrum is officially listed as Kangaroo number 460. This number shows he played for Australia.
Later Career and Premiership Win
After his successful time in Sydney, George Ambrum moved to Cessnock, New South Wales. He continued to play rugby league in the local Newcastle competition. In 1977, he helped his Cessnock team win a premiership. This is a major championship title.
