George Anderson Gordon (September 26, 1830 – October 5, 1872) was an American politician and lawyer. He was born in Savannah, Georgia. Gordon served in the Georgia state government and later as an officer in the Confederate military.

Early Life and Education

George Anderson Gordon was born in Savannah, Georgia, on September 26, 1830. When he was 16, he began studying at Yale College in 1846. He graduated from Yale in 1849. After college, he continued his education at Yale Law School for a year. There, he focused on studying law.

Legal and Political Career

In November 1850, Gordon started his career as a lawyer. He first practiced law in Newark, New Jersey. The next year, he moved back to Savannah, Georgia. He continued working as a lawyer there until 1860.

During his time in Savannah, Gordon also became involved in politics. He served as a United States District Attorney. This job meant he represented the U.S. government in legal cases in his district. He also became a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. This group helps make laws for the state of Georgia.

From 1860 to 1861, Gordon was a member of the Georgia State Senate. This is another important part of the state government that helps create laws.

Military Service

After his time in the State Senate, George Gordon joined the Confederate military. He started as a captain in the 1st Regiment of Georgia Volunteers. Later, he was promoted to major and then to colonel.

Later Life and Family

After the American Civil War ended, Gordon moved to Huntsville, Alabama. He continued to work as a lawyer there. He practiced law until he became ill. George Anderson Gordon passed away in Huntsville at the age of 42.

Gordon was married twice. His first wife was Carolina B. Steenbergen. They had one son. Later, he married Ellen C. Bevine. They had six children together. One of his children, Percy Gordon, later became the father of a well-known diplomat named George A. Gordon.
