His Life and Work
George Arthur Mitchell was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on June 20, 1860. His father, Alexander Moncrieff Mitchell, owned coal mines. George studied science and engineering at Glasgow University and earned a degree.
In 1897, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a special honor given to people who have done important work in science and knowledge. Later, in 1935, King George V made him a knight, which means he was given the title "Sir."
By 1904, he was living in a new, fancy house in Glasgow. He was listed as a director of the Flemington Coal Company. His cousin, Sydney Mitchell, who was an architect, designed the building.
Sir George Arthur Mitchell passed away on February 16, 1948. He is buried in the Glasgow Necropolis, a famous cemetery in Glasgow. He did not get married or have children.
