About George Baillie-Hamilton
George Baillie-Hamilton was the son of George Baillie and Mary Pringle. His younger brother was Charles Baillie, Lord Jerviswoode. His family had a long history in Scotland.
Becoming an Earl
In 1858, George Baillie-Hamilton became the 10th Earl of Haddington. He inherited this title from his second cousin, Thomas Hamilton, 9th Earl of Haddington. An "Earl" is a noble title, like a duke or a baron, and it often comes with land and a seat in the House of Lords. After becoming an Earl, he added "Hamilton" to his last name in 1859. This was allowed by a special permission called a Royal Licence.
His Political Career
In 1859, George Baillie-Hamilton was chosen to be a Scottish Representative Peer. This meant he could represent Scotland in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. He sat with the Conservative Party members.
From 1867 to 1868, he worked as a Lord-in-waiting. This was a role where he helped the government in the House of Lords, acting like a whip to make sure his party's members voted as planned. He served under important Prime Ministers like the Earl of Derby and Benjamin Disraeli.
He also held a special role from 1867 to 1868 as the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. This person represents the King or Queen at the annual meeting of the Church of Scotland.

Lord Haddington passed away at Tyninghame House on 25 June 1870. He was 68 years old.
