After George Bassett passed away, his company became even more famous. They created a very popular sweet called Liquorice allsorts. George Bassett also became the Mayor of Sheffield in 1876. While he was Mayor, he even had the President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, stay as a guest in his home!

George Bassett was born in a place called Ashover in Derbyshire, England. He was a very important person in Sheffield. He helped the city grow and become a better place.

In 1842, George Bassett started his own confectionery company. This means he made and sold sweets! His company, Bassett's, quickly became well-known. People loved the delicious treats he made.

He also had a famous great-niece named Ethel Haythornthwaite. She was born in 1894 and died in 1986. Ethel was important because she worked hard to protect nature and the countryside.
