Sir George Bond (1534–1592) was an important English politician in the 1500s. He held a very high position, serving as the Lord Mayor of London from 1587 to 1588. He was born in Somerset, England.

Early Life and Career

George Bond was the younger son of William Bond of Buckland. His older brother, also named William Bond, was an alderman and Sheriff of London. George Bond was part of the Haberdashers' Company. This was a powerful group of merchants who sold small items like needles, thread, and ribbons.

Before becoming Lord Mayor, Sir George Bond held other important roles in London. In 1579, he was chosen as the Sheriff of London. A Sheriff was a key official who helped keep law and order. Later, in 1584, he became an alderman for the Walbrook area. An alderman was a senior member of the city council.

When Sir George Bond was elected Lord Mayor in 1587, the usual big celebration, called the Mayoral Feast, had to be cancelled. This was because of a serious outbreak of the plague in London at the time.

Family Life

Sir George Bond married Winifred Leigh. Her father, Sir Thomas Leigh, had also been a Lord Mayor of London.

Sir George and Winifred had several children. Their son, Thomas Bond, became a Member of Parliament (MP) for areas like Launceston and Southampton. Another son, William Bond, also became an alderman. William's grandson, Thomas, was the first person to be given the special title of Baronet in the Bond family of Peckham.

Sir George Bond passed away in 1592. He was buried in the Mercers' Chapel. After his death, his wife Winifred married John Colles. John Colles was also a Member of Parliament for Minehead.
