The Hospital of St Thomas of Acre was an important building in medieval London. It served as the main base for a special group called the Knights of Saint Thomas. This group was a military order, which means they were like a mix of knights and monks. They followed religious rules but also fought to protect pilgrims.

The Hospital of St Thomas of Acre started as a church in 1227. It was built in an area of London called St Mary Colechurch. This place was very important because it was the birthplace of Saint Thomas Becket, who was the patron saint of the Knights of Saint Thomas. Over time, especially from the 1300s onwards, this hospital became the most important headquarters for the entire military order.

A New Owner: The Mercers' Company

In 1512, a powerful group of merchants called the Worshipful Company of Mercers became interested in the area around the church. They bought some land next to the church building. Their plan was to build their own main meeting hall there.

Just two years later, in 1514, the Mercers' Company took on an even bigger role. They officially became the "patron" of the Knights of Saint Thomas. This meant they supported the order and had a say in its activities.

Changes During the Reformation

A big change happened in England during the 1500s. This period is known as the Protestant Reformation. During this time, many religious orders and their properties were taken over by the King.

In 1538, the Knights of Saint Thomas order was officially closed down. All their buildings and lands, including the Hospital of St Thomas of Acre, were taken by the King. However, the Mercers' Company stepped in. They managed to buy back the properties from the King. They did this by making various payments and promises. This allowed the Mercers to keep control of the important site.
