George Constantine Nichopoulos (October 29, 1927 – February 24, 2016), often called Dr. Nick, was an American doctor. He was widely known for being the personal physician of the famous singer Elvis Presley.
Early Life and Education
George Nichopoulos was born in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, in 1927. When he was a baby, his family moved to Anniston, Alabama. There, his father, who was from Greece, opened a restaurant.
From 1946 to 1948, he served in the Army Medical Corps in Germany. This part of the army helps with medical care. After his service, he studied at the University of the South. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1951. Later, in 1959, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Career Highlights
Dr. Nichopoulos began working with Elvis Presley in 1967. At first, he treated Presley for a minor skin irritation. By 1970, he became Presley's full-time personal doctor. He continued in this role until Presley's death in 1977. His son, Dean Nichopoulos, sometimes helped out, even assisting with Presley's clothes.
Dr. Nichopoulos was not at Graceland when Elvis Presley passed away. He arrived later at the hospital where attempts were made to help Presley. Dr. Nichopoulos was also present during the medical examination after Presley's death. He was one of the people who carried Presley's coffin at the funeral.
In 1985, Dr. Nichopoulos started his own medical office called We Care, Inc.. Later in his life, he stopped practicing medicine. He then worked for a short time as a road manager for musician Jerry Lee Lewis. After that, he took a job checking medical insurance claims for FedEx employees.
Since he was no longer a doctor, he sold many items he had received from Elvis Presley at auctions. He even had a traveling display that showed his doctor's bag and some items related to his time with Presley.
Later Life and Death
George Nichopoulos passed away in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 24, 2016. He was 88 years old and had been ill for some time. He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.
