George Henry Robert Child Villiers, 8th Earl of Jersey (born June 2, 1873 – died December 31, 1923) was an important British nobleman and politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. His family, the Villiers family, has a long history in Britain.
George was the son of Victor Child Villiers, 7th Earl of Jersey. His mother was Margaret Elizabeth Leigh. She was the daughter of William Henry Leigh, 2nd Baron Leigh.
Serving the Public
George Child Villiers went to school at Eton College, a famous boarding school. Later, he studied at New College, Oxford University.
In 1915, he became the Earl of Jersey after his father passed away. He held a special role called a Lord-in-waiting for a short time in 1919. This meant he helped the King and government.
He also served his local community in many ways. He was a Justice of the Peace in Oxfordshire. This role meant he helped keep law and order. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant in Oxfordshire. This is a senior role that supports the Lord-Lieutenant.
George was an alderman and vice chairman for the Oxfordshire County Council. This meant he helped make decisions for the local government in Oxfordshire. He also held a special position as a high steward for the city of Oxford. He had similar roles in Middlesex too.
In 1923, Lord Jersey sold the Child & Co bank. This bank had been part of his family's wealth for a long time.
His Family Life
Lord Jersey married Lady Cynthia Almina Constance Mary Needham on October 8, 1908. Lady Cynthia was the daughter of Francis Needham, 3rd Earl of Kilmorey.
George and Cynthia had four children:
- George Child Villiers, 9th Earl of Jersey (1910 – 1998).
- Lady Joan Child Villiers (1911–2010).
- Hon. (Edward) Mansel Child Villiers (1913 – 1980).
- Lady Ann Child Villiers (1916 – 2006).
