George Curtis Moore (born September 7, 1925 – died March 2, 1973) was an American diplomat. He was sadly killed during a violent attack at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan. This attack was carried out by a group of terrorists.

George Curtis Moore: A Diplomat's Story

George Curtis Moore worked as a diplomat for the United States. Diplomats are people who represent their country in other nations. They help keep good relationships between countries.

His Work in Sudan

Moore was a very important official in the United States Interest Section in Khartoum. An "Interest Section" is like a temporary embassy. The main U.S. Embassy in Sudan had closed in 1967 during a conflict called the Six-Day War. So, a special U.S. Interest Section was set up inside the Netherlands embassy.

In July 1969, Moore was sent to work there as the main officer. He was trained as an "Arabist," meaning he had studied Arab culture and language. This helped him understand the region better.

When the U.S. Embassy in Sudan reopened on July 25, 1972, Moore became the "Chargé d'Affaires ad interim." This is a fancy title for someone who acts as the ambassador temporarily.

The Attack in Khartoum

On March 1, 1973, a group of Palestinian terrorists from a group called Black September attacked the Saudi Embassy. They stormed the building during a party that was being held for Moore.

Several ambassadors were there, including those from the Soviet Union, Britain, and France. The Pope's ambassador, known as the Papal Nuncio, was also present. Many of them managed to escape. For example, the French ambassador climbed over the embassy walls to get away.

Sadly, the next day, George Curtis Moore was shot and killed. The new U.S. Ambassador, Cleo A. Noel, Jr., and the Belgian Chargé d'Affaires, Guy Eid, were also murdered during the attack.

The terrorists later gave themselves up. They were sentenced to jail, but they were sent out of the country before they finished their sentences.

George Curtis Moore is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in the United States.
