Major-General George Elphinstone Erskine (1841-1912) was an important officer in the British Indian Army. He served in India during a major event called the Indian Mutiny in 1857.
Life and Military Service
George Elphinstone Erskine was born on January 20, 1841. He went to school at Bedford School. In 1857, he joined the British Indian Army. He served in India during the Indian Mutiny. This was a big uprising that happened between 1857 and 1858.
After the rebellion, Erskine continued his work in India. From 1863 to 1889, he was part of the Oudh Commission. This group helped manage the region of Oudh. In 1883, he was asked to look into how landlords and tenants got along in Oudh. He also joined a group in 1889 that worked to combine the governments of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh State.
Erskine retired from the army in 1895. He passed away in Brighton on September 12, 1912.
Family Life
George Elphinstone Erskine was married two times. His first wife was Blanche Cates. His second wife was Eva Constance Sarah Edwards.
He had three sons, and all of them also joined the army.
- His son from his first marriage was Lieutenant-Colonel Keith Erskine (1863–1914). He also served in the Indian Army.
- Another son from his first marriage was Captain Charles Ellis Hay Erskine (1866–1902). He was part of the Indian Staff Corps and died at age 36.
- From his second marriage, he had a son named General Sir George Watkin Eben James Erskine (1899–1965). He became a very high-ranking general.
