George Fane (of Burston) facts for kids
Sir George Fane (born 1581 – died 1640) was an English politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) at different times between 1601 and 1640. An MP is a person chosen to represent a group of people in the House of Commons, which is part of the country's government.
Early Life and Education
George Fane was born in 1581. His father was Sir Thomas Fane, and his mother was Mary Neville. His family lived in a place called Badsell in Kent, England.
George went to Queens' College, Cambridge in 1595 to study. Later, in 1597, he joined Lincoln's Inn, which was a place where people learned to become lawyers.
Serving as a Member of Parliament
George Fane became a politician and served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years.
- In 1601, he was first elected as an MP for Dover.
- On July 23, 1603, he was given the title of 'Sir' (knighted) by King James I during the King's coronation.
- In 1604, he was elected MP for Sandwich.
- In 1614, he was elected MP for Dover again.
- In 1621, he became an MP for Kent.
- From 1624 to 1629, he was elected MP for Maidstone three times.
After 1629, King Charles I decided to rule without Parliament for eleven years. This meant there were no elections or meetings of MPs during that time.
In April 1640, Parliament was called back for a short time, known as the Short Parliament. Sir George Fane was elected MP for Maidstone once more.
Sir George Fane passed away at the age of 59 in 1640.
Family Life
Sir George Fane was married twice.
His first wife was Elizabeth Spencer. They married on September 3, 1607. Elizabeth was the daughter of Lord Spencer. George and Elizabeth did not have any children together.
Elizabeth passed away in 1618. She was buried on November 19, 1618, in St Nicholas’ chapel inside Westminster Abbey. There is a large, beautiful monument made of alabaster and marble there to remember her.
Sir George Fane's second wife was Anne Boteler. With Anne, he had six children.
