George Fletcher (politician) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

George Fletcher was an important person in English politics a long time ago. He was born around 1666 and passed away around March 1708. He came from a well-known family in England.

George Fletcher was the oldest son of Sir George Fletcher, who was a Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. His mother was Mary.

What Was a Whig?

George Fletcher's family was part of a group called the Whigs. In those days, the Whigs were a political group in England. They generally supported the power of Parliament and wanted a strong government. They were one of the main political parties at the time.

George Fletcher's Role in Parliament

George Fletcher was a Member of Parliament (MP). This means he was chosen by people to represent them in the Parliament of England. Parliament is like a big meeting where laws are made and important decisions for the country are discussed.

He represented two different areas:

  • From 1698 to 1701, he represented a place called Cockermouth. This was a "borough," which is like a town or city that had its own representative in Parliament.
  • From 1701 to 1702, and then again from 1705 until he died, he represented the county of Cumberland. A county is a larger area, like a region.

Being an MP meant George Fletcher helped make decisions for England. He spoke for the people in his area and helped create laws.

The End of a Family Title

George Fletcher did not have any children. Because of this, when he passed away, the special family title of "Baronet" for the Fletchers ended. This happened after his older half-brother, Sir Henry Fletcher, also passed away. The title could no longer be passed down.
