In December, Apple covered the mural to protect it. It was then moved in January 2021 and given to an organization called Don't Shoot PDX.
About the Mural
Emma Berger painted the mural of George Floyd in downtown Portland on June 1, 2020. She finished the main part of the mural in about two hours. It showed George Floyd and the words "I can't breathe." She did not ask for permission to paint it.
Later, Emma Berger added more to the mural. She painted the faces of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. She also added the phrases "black lives matter" and "say their names." The image of George Floyd is about 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall.
How the Mural Grew
Emma Berger invited other artists to help with the mural. On June 4, more faces, names, and background pictures were added. Other artworks were also created in the area around the mural.
Damage and Repair
In August 2020, someone damaged the mural. They spray-painted the words "It's okay to be white" on it. Emma Berger came back to fix her artwork.
Moving the Mural
In December 2020, the company Apple covered the mural. They did this to keep it safe and protect it. The mural was then taken down in January 2021. It was given to a group called Don't Shoot PDX. This group works for justice and human rights.
