George Gregory, Jr. was an important American basketball player and community leader. Born in New York City in 1906, he made history at Columbia University. In 1931, he became the first African-American basketball player to be named an All-American. This means he was recognized as one of the best college players in the country. After his basketball career, he worked to improve his community, especially in Harlem. He passed away in 1994.

A Star on the Basketball Court

Gregory was a key player for the Columbia Lions basketball team. He helped them win their first league championship in the 1930–31 season. This league was called the Eastern Intercollegiate League, now known as the Ivy League. His teammate, Lou Bender, also played a big part.

By his senior year, Columbia's team was playing games at Madison Square Garden. They had an amazing season, winning 21 games and losing only 2. Because of his great skills, Gregory was chosen for several All-American teams that year.

Even with a full scholarship at Columbia, Gregory worked hard. He was a "red cap" at Penn Station in Manhattan. A red cap helped people carry their luggage. After college, he played semi-professional basketball. He also studied law at night at St. John's University School of Law to become a lawyer.

Making a Difference in the Community

Gregory cared deeply about helping others. While still at Columbia, he started working with the Harlem Center of the Children's Aid Society. From 1931 to 1953, he led youth programs in northern Manhattan and the Bronx. These programs helped many young people.

He also helped create the New York City Youth Board in 1947. This group worked to support young people in the city. From 1954 to 1968, he served on the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This commission helps make sure city jobs are given fairly.

From 1950 to 1965, Gregory was the chairman of the planning board for Harlem. This board worked with the Manhattan Borough President's office. He helped oversee many big public projects in Harlem, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. These projects improved the area for everyone. He later worked for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection from 1968 until he retired in 1970.

Later Life and Legacy

George Gregory, Jr. passed away on May 11, 1994, at age 88. He died in his apartment in Manhattan from a type of cancer. He was survived by his wife, Helen, his daughter, and three grandchildren. Gregory is remembered as a pioneering basketball player and a dedicated community leader who worked tirelessly for the people of New York City.
