George Hemmant CMG (born October 13, 1880 – died December 31, 1964) was an important British official. He worked as a colonial administrator. This means he helped manage countries that were part of the British Empire. He spent most of his career in places like the Federated Malay States and the Straits Settlements. These areas are now part of modern-day Malaysia and Singapore. Later, he became a top leader in Nigeria.

George Hemmant's Career
George Hemmant started his career on November 27, 1903. He joined the Malayan Civil Service. This was a group of people who helped run the British colonies in Malaya.
Working in Malaya
Hemmant held many different jobs in the Federated Malay States. He worked as an Assistant District Treasurer and a Revenue Auditor. He also served as an Assistant District Officer in several towns. In 1910, he became the Assistant Collector of Land Revenue. The next year, he was a District Officer in Temerloh.
Later, he moved to Kedah as an Acting Legal Adviser. From 1916 to 1918, he was an Acting Assistant Adviser in Muar. In 1919, he became the Collector of Land Revenue in Kuala Lumpur. He also worked as a Magistrate in Kuala Lumpur. In 1924, he was the Acting Under-Secretary.
Working in Singapore
In 1923, Hemmant moved to the Straits Settlements. This area included Singapore. Here, he served as the Acting Under-Secretary. He also worked as the Acting Colonial Secretary for different periods. Between 1924 and 1930, he was the Under-Secretary. He was appointed Acting Colonial Secretary twice during this time.
Top Leader in Nigeria
In 1930, George Hemmant got a very important job. He was appointed Chief Secretary to the Government of Nigeria. This made him one of the highest-ranking officials in the British colony of Nigeria. He took over from Sir Frank Baddeley.
George Hemmant's Life and Education
George Hemmant was born on October 13, 1880. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. William Hemmant. They lived in a place called Bulimba, in Sevenoaks.
On June 11, 1925, he married Gladys Evelyn. She was the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Knight. They got married in London. George and Gladys had one son, named Maurice Hemmant.
George Hemmant went to college in Cambridge. He earned his B.A. degree there.
Retirement
George Hemmant and his wife retired in 1934. After his long career, they settled down in Sevenoaks. This was the same area where his parents lived.
Awards and Honours
George Hemmant received a special award in 1929. He was given the title of Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). This award is a high honour given by the British monarch. It recognizes people who have done great service to the British Empire.
