George Levi Russell III, born in 1965, is a very important judge in the United States. He is currently the chief judge for the federal court in Maryland. This court is called the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

About George L. Russell III
George Levi Russell III was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1965. His father, George Levi Russell Jr., was also a very important judge. He was the first African American judge on the circuit court in Maryland.
Education and Early Career
George L. Russell III went to Morehouse College and earned his degree in 1988. He then studied law at the University of Maryland School of Law, finishing in 1991.
After law school, he worked for Judge Robert M. Bell from 1991 to 1992. He then worked at a law firm. From 1994 to 1999, he was an Assistant United States Attorney. This means he worked for the government, handling legal cases.
He worked at another law firm for a few years. Then, from 2002 to 2007, he was again an Assistant United States Attorney, this time working on criminal cases. Before becoming a federal judge, he served as a judge in Baltimore from 2007 to 2012.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On November 10, 2011, President Barack Obama chose George L. Russell III to be a federal judge. He was nominated to serve on the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. He would take the place of Judge Peter J. Messitte.
The Confirmation Process
To become a federal judge, a person must be approved by the United States Senate. George L. Russell III had a hearing with the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary in January 2012. This committee reviews judicial nominees.
In February 2012, the committee approved his nomination. On May 14, 2012, the full Senate voted to confirm him. He officially became a judge on May 22, 2012.
Chief Judge Role
On May 1, 2024, Judge Russell became the chief judge of the court. He took over this role after Judge James K. Bredar changed to "senior status." Senior status means a judge takes on a lighter workload but still serves.
