George Learmonth (Russian: Юрий Андреевич Лермонт, Yuri Andreevich Lermont; 1595–1633) was a brave Scottish soldier. He served in the Russian army during the 17th century. He started his military career in Russia in 1613. George joined as an ensign, which is a junior officer rank. He was part of Captain-Rittmeister Jacob Shaw's regiment.

George Learmonth showed great courage during a battle in Moscow. He helped defend the city against a Polish army. This happened near the Arbat Gates of Bely Gorod. His bravery was clear for everyone to see. When another officer was killed, the soldiers asked for George to take his place. He was then promoted to Lieutenant. As a lieutenant, he earned fifteen rubles each month. Later, during the Smolensk War (1632–1634), he became a Rittmeister. This means he was a cavalry captain. He died in battle in 1633 while fighting against Polish forces.

George Learmonth was born around 1595 in Fife, Scotland. Family stories say he was related to Thomas the Rhymer. Thomas was a famous Scottish poet and prophet from the 13th century. George was the son of Andrew Learmonth.

George also had a brother named Peter-Patrick Learmonth. Peter-Patrick was born around 1596. He was captured by Polish forces while fighting for Sweden. This happened during conflicts between Russia and Poland. Peter-Patrick then served in the Polish army for a time. He commanded troops in places like Smolensk.

Military Service in Russia

George Learmonth likely joined the Swedish army around 1610. Many Scots joined foreign armies at this time. He probably fought in a large Russian-Swedish army. This army was defeated by a smaller Polish army. This important battle happened at Klushino in June 1610.

After this, George joined the Russian army in 1613. He quickly proved himself to be a skilled soldier. His courage during the defense of Moscow was well-known. His leadership helped turn back the Polish forces.

George Learmonth had three sons: William, Andrey-Henry, and Peter. All of his sons also served in the Russian army. Their family became known as the Lermontov noble family.
